Janet - This question of purple-based foliage has been discussed on
iris-talk and also on its predecessor list iris-l. Try to access the
Mallorn archives. The way you phrased the last line about "regional
differences and personal preference" could be part of the previous
discussions. There is some thought that PBF = more cold-hardy plants or at
least more hardy plants. I was not accessing this list for many months -
more than a year and I don't have time or inclination to pour through the
Mallorn archives but this info should be there nicely arranged.

I am one who has found this to handy when planting my garden here in Zone
3 since it does _seem_ to have some validity. Not only in TBs but also in
Siberians. Since you live in Zone 4 (for sure cold :) you are probably
ensuring that you are selecting more hardy plants for your garden (if the
premise proves true, that is).

I also agree that the purple-based foliage is more attractive, btw.
