I just got a Jackson and Perkins Catalog and stumbled across their
ad for 'deeresistible' irises. There is no explanation of what the
term means, but they were registered by Schreiner's and introduced
by J & P Just think of it, you can get five rhizomes of a 2001
introduction for $16.95! CRATER LAKE BLUE, PIXIE DUST, and
VELVET BALLERINA are the J & P offerings along with others
where the color is not quite right on two well-known irises.
Speculation is that these are culls since Schreiner's didn't introduce
them nor list them in their catalog. This may put some legitimacy
to our discussions of 'marts' buying big dealers' culls. It's not the
same thing as the 'marts' buying just any old cull and putting a
picture of EDITH WOLFORD on the box. At least, these culls have
names of their own and are not rogues. It's ok for 'trade' customers
who are not irisarians and just want a pretty iris bloom in their yard
and are not 'into' irises like list members.
Calling them 'deeresistible' bothers me, though. I am almost
tempted to buy a collection and send it to Laurie F in MN just to see
if the deer leave them alone!
