Dear Amy:
Please send some of that rain to us. After a cold, wet spring delayed the
bloom season, it hasn't rained to amount to anything for six weeks. And it
has been unusually hot all during June. The ground is like cement, but with
big cracks in it. The perennials are drying up to dust because we can't
sprinkle enough of our acre to keep everything alive. The bearded irises are
hanging in there and not a sign of rot.
Make sure the water is draining from your iris beds. Dig channels out of the
beds if necessary. I would not sprinkle Comet all around. Just use it on
irises that show some sign of rot after you have cleaned out the rot.
