I wish it read "Please vote for your favorite 25 Tall Bearded Iris Varieties
from the AIS Bulleting listing for 2002" or something like that.  Some kind
of qualifier.  As it is, it doesn't represent or include what would be my
favorite 25 TBs.  A fast count reveals that I grow or have tried to grow 79
of the 459 on the list.  There are more coming this year.  I've seen more
growing elsewhere and if I'd been impressed enough, they'd likely be on
their way or on the wish list.  Many I have only seen in photos or read
about.  To get a vote from me, they would have to really be a favorite and
from several directions - and on the premises.  Were I to vote this year, it
would necessarily be a very short list.  I like many quite a lot.  I'd like
some even more if I could get them to perform anywhere near consistently.
But they don't.  I don't give up, but I wouldn't submit them as a favorite
until they did.

I cannot be comfortable with the list.  I can't help but feel it ends up
being a guideline for purchasing.  That's fine for many, but I think a
disservice to beginners or newbies.  When an ad states they are offering
Dykes Medal winners and Symposium iris (and I don't object to this in the
ads), I think someone starting out might use that as a guideline for
purchasing.  In fact, around here, they'd likely be better off with PORTRAIT
OF LARRIE, e.g., not on the list, but a superior performer to all but one or
two from the list.  Awards and such do imply superiority to a degree,
something that somehow has more merit than something that hasn't, so it's
natural for first-timers to use it as a guideline.  For me, the list would
have been very poor for that purpose.

I've not voted in prior years.  I thought when I opened the envelope and saw
the Symposium this year that I'd grown some long enough to vote with a clear
conscience.  I don't think I can again, despite those intentions.
