Linda this may help:
In many plants growth to a large degree is light triggered and sustained.
Hence when other factors (temp, moisture etc) are maintained at favorable
levels addition of light will increase the growth. I did this with daylilies.
I first initiated this project after observing soy beans maintaining growth
longer near steet lights. Did some minor research. Some reccomended giving
plants a rest even under artificial light. Given to excess, I rejected "rest"
period for daylily seedlings and gave them light from 6 pm until 6 am using a
photo cell attached to a rack of lights about 2 feet over the sprouted
seedlings. Growth rate was about, not quite, double as measured by seedling
height. Root systems had similar favorable results. I no longer do this since
after the first year you are in an annual cycle of bloom and cull anyway. But
it sure puts bang in first year growth for daylily seedlings.
