Hmmm, that would seem to be more of a participation problem then a symposium problem. :-) Kind of like voting.
Mike
There has been a participation problem as well as a voting problem with
the Symposium.
Gerry Snider has been at the helm of the Symposium Committee for about
two years now, and he VOLUNTEERED for the job. Since taking over, he
has cleaned up the Symposium ballot considerably. Remember the misspellings,
the duplications, and the numerous omissions. In fact, the Symposium
was so riddled with errors two years ago it had to be re-issued. I
know of many people who did not fill it out the second time, so there has been
a problem with the symposium itself. How quickly we forget.
And, there is a participation problem. Man people grow more than
TBs, yours truly included. Check out the Mallorn Archives for our
earlier discussions on an all-inclusive symposium under the heading
'A Modest Proposal.'
There is merit also for each section/society having its own symposium,
which would mean AIS would no longer be in the symposium business except
for perhaps reporting results of balloting conducted by somebody else.
Getting the regional results printed in the regional newsletter is
a concern, too. This is very important to know what grows well in the
region, so the Symposium is not necessarily a popularity contest.
BEVERLY SILLS is a very popular iris, and I love her, but I would never
vote for her on the Symposium. She blooms on runty stalks every
four or five years. EDITH WOLFORD is beautiful and popular, but most
of the iris growers in this country would not vote for her either. Remember
the threads on 'Edith bashing' just a short while ago?
So, there is a lot out there to consider. This thread is getting
more interesting by the hour.
