Re: Re: TB: Unknown Historic (was Street Walker)

I forgot to add that moving iris in October in our climate should not be a problem if you keep check during the winter to be sure they don't heave out of the ground. Normally, we pot all our rhizomes as they come in during the summer and don't have a problem with their heaving after they are put in the ground in the fall. However, if we have to plant a rhizome then that has not been potted, we put a half brick or medium sized stone on top of the rhizome to prevent heaving. Here in Kentucky our winters are prone to having a lot of freeze-thaw cycles and this method stops a lot of premature iris death.

Christian, I had a real good laugh at your characterization of this iris being so very old at fifty years. Keep a copy of this and put it away for twenty years and you, too, will have a good laugh! ; - )

<Does anybody know of a way to keep/ build up these irises?>

If you give them the same TLC as newer irises, they should thrive. Also, if you take a picture when they are blooming, you can send it to the HIPS (Historic Iris Preservation Society) identification guru who can most likely identify it for you.
