HYB: planned seed experiments

Thanks for all the thoughts & facts from all of you about planting fresh
seeds. My plans for this year's seed crop is to divide them into lots
and try several different techniques.

I will store some of them fresh (unscratched) in damp paper towels,
burrito fashion, in baggies in the fridge until soil temperature in a
protected spot near the house gets close to 60oF, then plant in pots
outdoors. I'm betting that this will coincide with the time we get
ideal germination/establishment of turnips and Sweet Williams here,
which will be sometime in August. Hopefully early August. I'm storing
them in the refrigerator to keep them from drying out or rotting.

A few seeds from bee pods I will scratch thru the seedcoats, then treat
as above.

Some seeds will go straight from the pods into pots outdoors in a
protected location (soil temp around 70oF). Some that I really don't
care about will go into pots sitting on a concrete block platform just
above water level in the middle of the spring branch where temperatures
are slightly above 60oF. The water level is fairly constant, unless we
get a major downpour.... slightly risky.

Some seeds I will dry a few weeks then do the same toilet tank soak
followed by refrigeration routine of last year.

And some seeds from some beepods will follow the age old tradition of
going straight into the seed flats around Thanksgiving or later.

All seedlings that germinate this fall will have a grand race (with
protection, fertilizer and extra water) to get big enough to survive the
winter, but I will also have them in pots so if we get a 'normal' winter
again and temperatures drop below 10oF, I can bring them indoors.
