Rebloom itself is not consistent in irises today (even in those instances it
does happen). It's a little like the concept of average rainfall, you're not
going to have exactly the average often, if ever. But, rebloom will someday
be consistent. One piece of information I see aiding the effort is proposal
#5. Otherwise we must rely on divine intervention of random crosses made
between parents that carry genes for widely varying rebloom cycles. Observing
intervals between California bloom and rebloom against time interval here
there has not been a great difference. Too we often see references made to
the interval in the names chosen for reblooming irises. Most of the
dispersion, as it occurs, in the rebloom interval of a specific cultivar have
been attributed to growing/weather conditions by most people growing them.
Part of the difficulty/misery of rebloom here is that it is often initiated
in late November or December and succumbs to freezes. Iris buyers in the
Southeast would benefit from ability to make choices that have a reasonable
chance of succeeding (iris buyers in general I suspect would). Current
available info provides the zones in which rebloomers have been observed
performing though they make no distinctions for atypical weather conditions.
Too, We are able to tell which zone the iris was hybridized in by observing
the hybridizer name and checking the addresses in the back of the checklist.
The info suggested in proposal #5 is not recorded anywhere to the best of my
knowledge.
No, it will not always (ever) be precise. But yes, it will always serve as a
needed benchmark. For example an iris registered as Mid Re 5 would likely
rebloom in late Sept or early Nov. since my peak bloom occurs end of April.
Assuming of course I maintained proper growing conditions for the iris.
Generally speaking it is the growing conditions that vary and not the
propensity of the plant to initiate rebloom.
Your interest and input are appreciated.
