Re: AIS: Symposium/soap box

I see where Walter claims write-in votes were not worthwhile because
write-in candidates never got enough votes to make a difference. Kinda'
like in presidential elections, I guess. I stated last year when this topic
came up that the reason is MOST PEOPLE ARE SHEEP. If you tell them what to
believe, they will nod their heads and believe it, especially if it is
written by an "expert". It is also much easier to check boxes than to
attempt a little independent thinking. This hypothesis was pretty much
ignored.

Now Bill's idea of ALL write-in votes, limited to 10 per person, seems valid
to me. Maybe the tally could be easier if each RVP culled the list at a
threshold level of votes (maybe even a 2-vote minimum would eliminate the
real non-contenders; after all, 2 votes from every region would add up).
Anybody who really cares could come up with a list of 10 favorites, and if
you aren't discriminating enough to have a considered opinion, why should a
lazy whim count as a vote? Surely everyone will have a different opinion,
but are only people who are carefully and thoroughly indoctrinated in the
belief system of the current ruling class qualified to decide what our
opinions should be limited to? Somewhere there was once a Chinese lady who
refused to choose between cutting off a couple of her toes or folding and
tying them underneath her foot, even though it was explained to her that
these were the only two valid options. The saddest thing of all is when no
one questions or challenges narrow mindsets. If it is true that Mesmerizer
won the Dykes, that should be proof. The current "powers" are high on
rebloomers and space agers, and after all doesn't MB deserve another legacy
vote? Nothing wrong with any of these preferences, but they don't justify
an otherwise less than ordinary iris winning the ultimate honor.

As far as "becoming a judge" goes, I would agree that given the time and
money to go to conventions on a regular basis, and given some local training
opportunities, it would be nice. When I used to live closer to a local iris
society, I noticed that many of the other members were retired and few had
young children. This was particularly true for the judges. Time and money
