Re: CULT: TB: Potting Question

<Hi All; Once the iris is in the pot, what is the average length of time
it takes for visible signs of growth to appear? Also, what should I look
for as a sign of growth? A watched pot never boils, but does it grow?

Connie, when I put new rhizomes in temporary pots, I use the smallest
ones that a rhizome will fit into - usually a little flimsy 4 inch pot
will do. Often, the central leaf of the fan will start elongating
almost immediately on a vigorous plant. Also, the individual leaf blades
of the fan will sort of spread out.

I leave them in the pot until roots start coming out the bottom of the
pot. Some of us had a discussion about this a year or 5 ago <g>, & the
fastest any of mine put roots out the bottom was 2 weeks. By that time,
the roots that aren't coming out the bottom will have anchored the
contents of the pot together well enough that most of it will hold
together to be transplanted if you're careful. A few alfalfa pellets
mixed into the potting mix will also help glue it together.

I can't remember for sure, but seems like the cultivars that didn't have
roots showing within a month were usually duds here.
