lifting and dividing

I am an experienced Iris lover, but a relative newbie to
Iris gardening (4 years). I've never come across this
problem before in my gardening because I've never tried my
hand at hybridizing before.
There are several seed pods in a clump of IB's I have to
lift and divide. I say *have to* instead of *would like to*
because I didn't get to them last year - and this is the 4th
year in the same spot. Talk about over grown!
What do I do about the seed pods/stalks/plants they are
attached to?? The pods are still green. Only one is a bee
pod - the others are actual crosses I made.
Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
