I think your husband is right. If you must you must. Your method does have 
merit and may be better than the second alternative I suggested.

The caveat is to damage the roots feeding the stalked rhizomes as little as 
possible. Depending on your soil conditions they may have spread a foot or so 
in all directions surrounding a mature rhizome.

Seeds are more important than rhizomes here.
