I love it! <g> Gives me hope that maybe some of the seeds I've planted
this past week might germinate. I'm glad I'm not trying to make a
living from this....
Janet, Was the seedling from fresh seed, this year's crop?
One of the webpages I looked at had a nice graph showing the
relationship between temperature and time until germination - at optimal
germination temperature (which most of what I read says is somewhere
between 40 and 60 for bearded irises), seeds germinate quickly. The
farther away from that optimum, the longer it takes them to germinate
and the more opportunity for them to enter deep dormancy and take years
to germinate.
Now I'm going to go study pedigrees of your two parent irises and make
up some more theories <g>
<here's my interresting just yesterday observation: despite this awful
humidity and temps daytime hovering around 90 but a heat index making
it feel like 100 to 105, a seedling STILL managed to not only germinate
but it is about 1 inch high! (Night temps mid to high 70s). It was
my cross of SALMON BAND x BLAZING SUNRISE. Just when you think you
have a theory.....Janet Natale zone 8 of SC>
