A little bit different thinking but oddly enough, small rhizomes appears to
be the norm this year. At our Iris Auction, yesterday, there were many, many
small or tiny rhizomes. I have the feeling that you will get good bloom
and increase in spite of the size. Watering has become quite an issue with
the drought and we all know that the larger rhizomes do store excess water.
The smaller rhizomes are mostly with the older plants that haven't been
moved for several years. The recently planted, higher priced Iris not so as
they were planted with extra soil amendments, special fertilizers and
probably on the preferred for watering list.(Have you noticed that these
huge plants don't always make it, much less bloom?)
The apparent reason for selling the older Iris so cheaply is to make room
for newer varieties and to get rid of varieties that haven't been good
movers in the seller's garden. $1.00 per plant isn't too bad a price...put
them in the ground and complain to the Company next year if they don't grow
(like with any Iris, expect a 30 to 50% bloom, the first year),or you could
send them back, today. I'm voting for giving the sender a fighting chance.
Smiles from Mary, in sunny & dry Nebraska
