Re: CULT: Critters

Cats eat grasshoppers. You would need a lot of cats to make a deference.

Before the advent of BT, we had a dachshund who would accompany me to the vegetable garden every morning, nose through the tomato plants, pick off the hornworms, and consume them as though they were a real gourmet delight. This is the only dog I have ever heard of that ate them. Now if we could only find some pet that would eat grass hoppers, my iris would look a lot better.

  Hi Mike:
I know those "big green caterpillars" well! They are the tomato Hornworm
and are the larvae of a rather large moth with white zigzags on their rear
wings and orange or brownish spots on their bodies. They have a wing spread
of 4-5 inches. I never found that they damaged the tomatoes, but they sure
play hell with the foliage, stripping it down to bare stalks. Funny thing
about those hornworms. . even my chickens wouldn't eat them! You throw
ANYTHING to chickens and they converge on it like crazy. . .throw in a
hornworm and they run towards it and then run away!! By the way, BT works
very well on them. I have some excellent photographs I took of a hornworm
parasitized by a braconid wasp. If you're interested, drop me a note off
line and I'll send it to you.
