Re: CULT: Arilbreds

There doesn't appear to be in the halfbred types, at least. The collar has
been pretty well defined in those commonly called 3/4, but at least one of
those didn't have much collar even though the bloom has pronounced aril
characteristics. I haven't had that many of the type set seeds, so my
experience there is a small sample. The OGB-, OB- and RB- types generally
have less collar in my experience but even a couple of those have shown the
collar to a greater degree than halfbreds that have a stronger aril
influence in the blooms. That's why I think the amount of collar is
something that is inherited from the parents along with other aril
characteristics, but is independent - more or less - from the other
characteristics. In that scenario the more aril genes involved would tend
to give the collar more often but not necessarily. I've been surprised at
the lack of much collar on some seeds obtained from crosses involving a
balanced amphidiploid pod parent with a strong aril look. I don't think the
pollen parent contributes to how the seed appears at all.
