Discouraging tour of the iris rows turned up very few plants with
negligible leaf damage, and like you, Neil, I saw quite a few of the
newer things and my own seedlings losing entire outer leaves to soft
rot. Most just have varying degrees of tips of older leaves dead, some
as much has half of the foliage. One or two new arrivals last year
completely succumbed to soft rot.
Among the newest cultivars, these had minimal leaf damage:
LAKE OF BAYS - looks like a very slow grower here - planted very late
last fall, now has one <huge> fan
SHARPSHOOTER - probably too soon to say on this one - planted very late
last fall, severely dehydrated end of season rhizome from Schreiners,
terminal died over the winter, but increases are very healthy
Not sure what to think about these three. They are winter imports from
Oz. All have minimal damage to foliage, but they are still confused
about the seaons.
DIGNITY DANCER
OH SHE SAID
ABOUT TOWN - also got a start of this last summer, and it doesn't look
nearly as good as the plant imported this winter.
A lot of really good survivors among those with less than a quarter of
the foliage damaged - mostly with dead tips of outer leaves. These same
cultivars show little or no damage in well drained clay on the
ridgetop. But they are mostly older ones, plus seedlings.
