New Iris Beds

Greetings,

I lurk here mostly and have a question now.  I lost most of my iris in the
last two summer because I injured my back and the grass took over.  So, I am
purchasing new iris and my back is better, but could I mulch the iris a bit
just to keep some of the weeds at bay?  I usually use a bit of cocoa bean
hulls.  Also, would be pre-emergent such as preen be ok to sprinkle around
after the iris are in?  I am looking forward to having beautiful iris beds
again.  Thank you for your help.
