Re: Re: HYB: PBF history?

I may be mistaken in this, it is just an impression, but it seems that
when PBF genes that (I assume) are from I. aphylla are combined with those
from (again I assume) I. variegata, the result is an intensification.
Other species show PBF as well. I don't have a list handy, but I know it
is in I. junonia.

It is my impression as well that most of the PBF as expressed in bearded
Iris hybrids was inherited originally from I. variegata.

Also, I. lutescens, and the base-8 chromosome species of dwarf species
(which are probably ancestral in part to the 40 chromosome species such as
I. lutescens) will often show the purple leaf sheaths that are expressed
below ground and ring the tubers. This trait is seen in many MDB's,
SDB's, IB's, and even some in other classes, and I have seen it combined
with PBF in the same plant in several IB's. I wonder how it interacts
genetically with PBF, if at all.

I would love to see the PBF trait expanded on, into fully purple foliage.
Combined with variegation or the right flower colors, this could be quite
spectacular, but it would be pretty neat all alone.
