Hello Dave, Chuck and others,
I'll start by echoing Chuck's sentiment that we should
be cautious in interpreting what we've seen. I've seen
how variable PBF [purple-based-foliage] can be
throughout the year in the SAME plant (and also
expressed differently due to growing conditions). And
there is definitely a full range of expression among
different seedlings, varying from year-round
pronounced PBF, to PBF that is barely noticeable and
that might only be seen at a certain time of the year.
I would also venture to even go beyond Chuck's mention
that there is "at least one modifying gene for depth
of colour and probably another one for extension along
leaves." I think that in time, we'll find that there
are many modifier genes that contribute to how PBF is
expressed. It seems to me, that there may be a gene
that is an intensifier of PBF expression in
KUPARI(non-PBF). I say this because I've noticed that
PBF seedlings from KUPARI X ROSEMARY'S DREAM show
strong PBF, whereas PBF seedlings from CLOWN
PANTS(non-PBF) X ROSEMARY'S DREAM only express it
mildly. As for the possibility of a PBF inhibitor
gene, I only mention that as one possible explanation
of results I've seen. I just don't think that PBF is a
simple dominant/recessive situation. If there was no
other complicating genes and PBF was a dominant gene
and non-PBF the recessive, the ratios of PBF to
non-PBF (in a cross of PBF X non-PBF) should be either
100% PBF (if the PBF parent was homozygous) or 50% PBF
: 50% non-PBF (if the PBF parent was heterozygous).
Both of the ROSEMARY'S DREAM crosses mentioned above
have much less than 50% PBF seedlings -- even
accounting for mildly expressed or seasonally
expressed versions. So there must be more to the
story.
I'm really enjoying this thread, by the way. And
hopefully by next season, I'll be able to supply a few
more pieces for this puzzle. I've got several (but
unfortunately small) batches of seeds from various
diploid seed parents, all from pollen of the strong
PBF seedlings (from KUPARI X ROSEMARY'S DREAM). One
seed parent was a seedling with purple/red margined
foliage (KUPARI X suaveolens var rubromarginata).
Hopefully we'll get to see how the purple margin trait
interacts with the PBF. I can hardly wait.
Tom
