When I was getting ready to plant 4 acres of pasture and prairie grass, a 
farmer and Soil & Water Conservation employee recommended Roundup or generic 
equivalent to prepare the area for drill seeding.  The advantage was no or 
little residue from Roundup.  This was about a week prior to planting. 
Germination and growth has been ok.
I heard from the farmer that 2,4 D may leave a residue.  That's all I know.
