Char, if you don't want to use Roundup, you could try covering the bed
with plastic (solarize) for several weeks.  Or however long it takes.
Or repeatedly tilling the bed.  Each tilling will stir up more seeds
(those that need light to germinate).  Depending on how many seeds are
in the soil, and how many times you can till it, you may be able to
significantly reduce the number of grass seedlings.

But that's a lot of work - Roundup is certainly easier, not particularly
toxic to anything other than the plants it hits, plus it breaks down
quickly.  The additives some formulations contain that help it stick
better to leaves are more toxic than Roundup, but not to plants, just to
people.

I think that's right... been awhile since I read any of that stuff.
