Hi everyone;
I used one 100 watt Metal Halide floodlight (Lithonia TFM 100M TA 120/277
LPI) for my indoor hydroponics project with iris.
Cost for the light was about $100 from Home Depot, and was cheap to operate
compared to other strong light sources. Growth was excellent. There was some
supplimental lighting from a nearby window. You need to wear eye and skin
protection when you are close to this light because of the UV light. You can
read more about lighting and plants in How-To Hydroponics by Keith Roberto. On
page 43 of the 4th edition it gives a chart relating growth to light wave
length. A short quote from the book:
"Blue light stimulates hormones that trigger growth and inhibit dormancy. Blue
light powers photosynthesis causing tips to grow towards the source. Metal
Halide lamps emit strong levels of blue light making them good for promoting
growth of leafy plants." pg 42, 43; How To Hydroponics 4th edition by Keith
Roberto.
If you are raising Iris indoors, this book is an excellent source of info.
