When my internet provider recently fixed the problem of people
being unexpectedly deleted from the list, they also corrected a
long-term nuisance--the insertion of hostnames into some email
addresses.
The problem was that a large internet provider may use several
computers to process mail. If your email address is jpublic@provider.com,
one day your mail may go out from the address jpublic@host1.provider.com,
the next day from jpublic@host3.provider.com, etc. Previously, the
listserver had been using these more detailed names, and complaining
when today's address didn't match yesterday's. It's now been made
smart enough to always use the simple address, jpublic@provider.com,
so there will be no more inconsistencies for it to get worked up
about.
This will fix problems some of you have encountered in sending
commands to the listserver. The addresses that include the host names
are still in the system files, however. I will try to change them as
I notice them, but there may be problems for a little while as this
all settles out. In the end, it will make the list run much better,
however.
Happy irising, Tom.
