The year of introduction is the standard date to use. It determines award
eligibility, as well as how long the iris has been available commercially
(and hence how pricey you can expect it to be). The standard practice is to
use the year of registration only when the year of introduction is not
available, and then to indicate it clearly with "R." before the year. Thus
Desert Jubilee (Flanagan '96) -- an iris registered in 1994; but
Domingo (Wilson, R.'96) -- an iris not yet introduced
As you point out, this system does cause some difficulty when working with
the checklists, which not only give the description with the registration
record, not the introduction record, but also put the year of registration
immediately following the hybridizers name, where standard practice would
put the year of introduction. Alas, I think it is just something we have to
live with.
