I can't vouch for Preen but I can recommend Surflan.  Surflan is what I
used before I started solarizing.  It is mixed with water and sprayed
over the top of the iris.  Do this before a rain as it needs a half inch
of water to be activated, or water in by hand.  One application can last
up to one year.
