Nancy,
     What you have is the Iris borer.  When you replant the Iris, make sure
that you have removed all of the caterpillars.
     As for control, remove all dead Iris material before spring.  Spray
the plants with either Cygon or Lindane when spring growth gets a few
inches tall.
