I went on an interesting garden tour today - despite the heat, it feels
like South Carolina at the moment!
One of the gardens we visited was right along a river bank and enclosed
with tall fence which faced south. I was surprised to see that the
Japanese irises were finished andm on enquiry, learned that they
normally flowered in mid-June. I live twenty miles away and mine are
between first and second blooms right now. The garden also had lavender
in full flower - at least four week early?
The owner felt that his garden was Zone 6 - whereas this region is
normally considered Zone 4B or lower. It just goes to show the power of
microclimatic differences! I would imagine that in winter the two
areas would be very close and very cold.
