HIST-CHAT--Allons, enfants de la patrie!

Bonjour, ya'll, and Happy Bastille Day!

As we pause---and given the heat over most of the country many of us will be
pausing often, and with alacrity----to celebrate independence and the rights
of man with the French, swig a little Sancerre and play those Piaf tapes, let
us not forget to toast the early French iris hybridizers including Lemon----
who gave us the enchanting variegata HONORABILE and the beloved early plicata
MME CHEREAU-- Denis, who crossed bearded and creasted irises to achieve
PALTEC, and the great Cayeux, deserving of a separate toast for BEOTIE,
DEPUTE NOMBLOT, JEAN CAYEUX, and so many other elegant irises. Too, let us
salute the distinguished folk who continue the tradition in France today,
including a new generation of Cayeux, who have brought us ALIZES and the
popular COLETTE THURILLET, and M. Anfosso, hyridizer of the lovely yellow
amoena ECHO DE FRANCE and the tricolor REVOLUTION! Vive la Revolution!

Wishing she was in Aix,

Anner Whitehead, Richmond, VA---forecast to approach 100F tomorrow
and the ever cool Henry Hall, henryanner@aol.com
