They seem to be relatively tolerant of variation in soil mixtures,
especially for a temporary home. What they DEMAND is shade. When I fir=

moved to Las Cruces I tried July planting and lost over 80% of the TBs. =
Post-mortem revealed rhizomes the consistency of baked potatoes.
As Tom pointed out, there are gardens in the Las Cruces area (on the
cool/east side of the river) where people successfully plant in July. Up=
on the mesa, on the west side of the river, I've managed to get a pretty
good survival rate by building a ramada over the bed and watering it 3
times a day. Pots are easier!!!
