Greetings:
Bill Smoot asked asked for a description of B.Y. MORRISON (Sturtevant, 1918)
I can do that.
Cornell Bulletin 112 says "Color effect a bluish lavender, velvety violet
veined bicolor. S. bluish lavender with yellow claw. F. velvety flourite
violet, edged grayish lavender, and bearing a lavender line through the
center of the segment....The beard is conspicuous orange colored....the plant
is stiff and slender in leaf and stalk. The medium flowering habit is
balanced by the good size and color, thus making the plant useful in mass and
as a cut flower. Rating 85."
However, J. Marion Shull in his book Rainbow Fragments (1931), p.192 says the
beard is "Yellow, but sparse and not conspicuous", and while noting
"Excellence in form and color" notes that it has no fragrance. Shull gives
the height as 33 inches, and the season as Midseason to late. He says the
lavender can fade to dull white.
