Rima asks about planting Japs in standing water. It is generally
accepted that standing water in the winter months is very bad for Japs.
In my discussions with other growers, there are times that this has not
proven to be true. Many of the "rules" for Japanese culture were
developed in harsh northern climates. I have found that here in Zone 7
(almost 6), I can break some of those rules. Rules NOT to be broken are
acid pH, heavy feeding and moist conditions, especially in the first
growing season after transplant.
Anner asks if these plants were in similar conditions. They were planted
less than 24" apart in the wettest portion of the bog.
I'll continue to take notes.
