With the recent questions on the genetics of space agers, Thornbird makes a
good model. A pedigree is posted on the HIPS website,
http://www.tricities.net/~mikelowe (Dykes pedigrees, etc.)
Space agers are marked with a red square, rebloomers with green.
The space age line goes: Thornbird (Byers 89) --> Byers B-8-2 --> Sky Hooks
(Osborne 80) --> Moon Mistress (Osborne 76) --> Spooned Blaze (Austin 65)
--> Lemon Spoon (Austin 61) --> Horned Papa (Austin 61) --> (Mitchell
JSM-176B x Austin 638)
Lloyd Austin received several plicata seedlings from Sidney Mitchell that
formed the foundation of the Austin space age line. The Austin cross that
resulted in Unicorn (Austin 54) was: (Mitchell JSM-176B x Austin 638). The
Mitchell seedling number is incorrect in the 59 Check List. (Austin gave
the correct number in a BAIS article.) Austin 638 is Advance Guard
(Mitchell 45) selfed.
The SA trait seems to be as dominant as will be exhibited in tetraploid
genetics. It also seems to be strongly linked to transference through the
male line.
In some seasons, Advance Guard shows a small blue horn. The 1922
International iris conference proceedings has reference to "monstrosities."
We are not talking a new phenomena, only one that Lloyd Austin was shrewd
enough to develop and market. (If you believe that hype and showmanship are
recent innovations a look at the Austin catalogs will show merchandising
that, arguably, has never been equaled or even approached.)
