Re: Cult: Clorox

Chlorox kills HiV, according to my friend the hospital infection control
specialist.
And you are right, some plants cannot tolerate being bleached. Bleach
breaks down proteins.

Nancy, thank you for getting an expert's input into the "is bleach alkaline
or acid question." I bow to David's superior knowledge. Heloise the hint
lady is the one who told me household bleach is alkaline. Color me wrong.
:-)

I do think David's wrong, however, about vinegar simply masking the smell.
It does more than that. Go ahead and try the experiment I suggested, using
household bleach on your hands followed by vinegar or lemon juice, either
one will work. Do that and then explain to me why the vinegar isn't
removing the bleach.
I'm not just being stubborn, I promise. I really would like to know. :-)

The encyclopedia mentions sulfuric acid being used in various commercial
bleaching processes as a neutralizer. Listen to this: "Because bleaches
weaken the fabric, the cloth is then put into a mild solution of sulfuric
acid to neutralize the action of the bleach. This is followed by rinsing in
clear water."

Is it possible the vinegar is connecting with the bleach somehow to make it
flow into solution faster, rather than combining in the strict acid-base
sense in which the combination produces a salt and water?

Thank you all for being so smart. I learn much every time I open my mouth
in this forum ... sometimes more than I wish I had to learn, but I'd rather
be proved wrong than remain ignorant.
