Jeff, I think KathyGuest got her moles and voles scrambled. At least, here
in the boonies, we have primarily voles. I lost the better part of an iris
bed to them one winter when I jumped the gun and mulched heavily before the
ground froze. BAD idea. The voles said "How comfy," moved in, and feasted
on rhizomes all winter under the snow. Voles can definitely be a problem
here, but mostly in winter.
Moles--we have a few; Kathy probably doesn't in her more suburban area.
They are fairly rare, and not much of a problem. The star-nosed mole is
kind of cute....
And no gophers. BUT lots of woodchucks, which generally leave irises alone
but love lettuce, peas, green beans, etc., etc.
As to the CA critters...I wouldn't venture to guess!
