Hey Bob. I find a digging fork safer to use than a spade. It also helps to
water the clump the night before you dig, so the ground will be a little
softer. Dig all around the edges and pry out what you can, working your way
inward.
The mother rhizomes without fans but with solid roots might make new
increases, or they might not. It depends on the cultivar and on how old the
mother is. Look at the sides to see if there are any signs of new growth.
Good roots suggest you might get more life from the rhizome. But that would
be investing in bloom for two years away, and you have an abundance of the
plant already. A lot of people toss those mamas in the chipper. (My own
mama saves every last one.)
