Each year there is some innovation at an AIS Convention that
always seems to make the convention a little different and hopefully
better than the one preceding it.
'Rocky Mountain Date 98' has already done something only the
hybridizers may know about, and, of course, the Denver sponsors. In
yesterday's mail from Catherine and Dennis Gates (Long's Gardens and
Guest
Iris Co-chairs) came a printout on the status of the guest irises I
sent to them last year. The headings are as follows:
VARIETY/SEEDLING # GARDEN ALIVE? BLOOM GROWTH REPLACE
Katerine and Dennis had the help and input from all eleven gardens as data
has been recorded in each column (except replace, thank goodness). This
represents a tremendous effort at record-keeping. I sent twenty-seven
rhizomes and I have the current status on each one! I have never seen
this procedure done before, and I certainly appreciate their efforts.
For the record, and this is a RECORD, not one of my rhizomes failed to
survive the cold Colorado winter. I do have a 'sick' plant or two, but
there is the message 'affected by late freeze' as the cause of the
'illness.'
In the growth column, they have counted every increase!!! Amazing!
To all of the Colorado irisarians involved, I thank you. And those on
Iris-L, please inform Catherine and Dennis of my thanks in case I do not
get around to snail mailing them my appreciation.
Again, this is the most valuable information I have ever received from a
convention. These gardeners know each time an iris sneezes as their
record keeping is so exact.
