Since I am now on 'Digest' I only get one message a day--so will respond to several others at the same time:
Riverview Iris Gardens 21680 Upper Pleasant Ridge Caldwell ID 83605 (catalogue $5.00 refunded with first order) 208-453-1305 (Tony and Irene DeRose)that is the newest phone number--but they will probably be outside digging and filling orders!
In Region 13 Newsletter--Spring 1997 (cannot find 1998) Walsterway Iris Garden 19923 Broadway, Snohomish WA 98290 (Catalogue $1.00) no phone # given
re: latting pods dry fully outside--not a good idea! when your back is turned they will pop open and you have to look around the ground for the seeds--which look like little rocks (which do not germinate) so I wait till they are almost 'ripe' just starting to turn bworn, cut off the stem and bring the pod inside--put it into a glass of water in the sun on the back porch, and check daily--that way when it is about to pop, I can clip the stem and put the pod into a little plastic cup so that the seeds cannot scatter all over!
When I was discussiong pod to germination time and how to get good germination with Keith Keppel--he made a remark about how wise God was to design the Iris pods with three sections--that way if a bug or worm got into the pod, it usually ate only one section and left the other two with seeds to germinate. I agree with him--and several times each year when I open a pod I find that the seeds in one compartment are not mature while the others are--remarkable.
note to Dahliaman--reply to me privately and tell me where the Dahlia talk is--so far have not been able to find it.
re: remedies for slugs--thanks to all who sent them to me--the ammonia sure works! We have been invaded by Raccoons now--have three eating my Iris pods at night--smart ones who avoid the traps--after finally getting pods to appear I now have the 'coons eating them--
Spuria are now in bloom-after four years they have burst forth in all their stately glory--they are so tall! Have named ones and a couple from a neighbor which might be specie--one is white with a yellow thumbprint--really showy.
All for now--Carryl in Western Montana--finally a few days with no rain!
