Lora,
Today while digging irises up for shipping, I noticed granules of
fertilizer still in the ground that I had used last fall when planting
irises. With all the rain we had this past winter, the fertilizer had not
yet broken down. We had a beautiful bloom season after getting a late
start, but poor increases. My thinking is, the irises didn't get any
fertilizer.
Most likely, you are looking at the carrier material. What it is will
vary from brand to brand. It lasts long after the fertilizing component is
gone.
