Ever amusing is right. This was my first foray into the '39 color chart and I
find it interesting. Definitions have certainly changed, at least I think they
have. But that generates some questions so...
In the '39 table Mike is developing at the HIPS site

at the entry for R7D (Red predominant, pink to red toned self, dark) is a
pointer to:

My question is: What was the definition of "self" at that time ('39) that
includes what looks to me to be a bitone by todays standards. Or do we know?
