Re: Seed Pods

Hi Talk-ers,

somebody asked....

><<I've heard the stories of hunting for seed on the ground and I
>really don't want to do this! :)

then somebody replied....

>Cover them with lenghts of panty hose cut about 4-5" long and fastened
above
>and below the pod with twist ties. This also helps discourage insects
that
>often eat on the pods. Let the pods begin to split at the top before

and now my story....

I have had some trouble with this panty-hose practice of seed
harvesting. It was suggested to me by someone (can't remember who)
several years ago when I mentioned that I had found catepillars chewing
holes in my pods so I decided to try it out.

First of all, since I have no wife, girlfriend or significant other, I
had to *find* panty-hose to cut up so I decided to ask the girls at
work for their old panty-hose. It took me FOREVER to think of how to
bring the subject up at work without getting slapped in the face or
slapped with a sexual harrassment law suit. Then it took me DAYS to
approach any of the girls to ask for their pany-hose. Highly
embarrassing!!!

Anyway, so I cut the pantyhose into suitable lengths, knotted one end,
slipped it over the pods and tied it around the neck of the pod and
waited. Right away I noticed that visibility was poor, I couldn't see
the pod through the bunched up panty-hose material so couldn't really
tell when they were splitting without stretching the material to see
through it. But the worst was yet to come (as if asking the girls wasn't
bad enough). When it finally came time to harvest them, I broke them off
the stalk with panty-hose hat still attached and brought them into the
house where my drying trays were ready to receive them. So I cut the
string off the bottom and open the sack and dozens of EARWIGS fall
out!!!! In fact all the pantyhose sacks were earwig motels. I was very
grossed out!!!!!

*do I hear laughing?*

Anyway, I do not do this panty-hose thing anymore. Instead I mist my
pods with an insecticide and that seems to discourage the chewing bugs.
And I make daily rounds and pick pods as they start to split. So far I
haven't missed any but then again, I don't have two acres of pods to
police either. Thank goodness....
