Hello Vicki,
Thought I would tell of my experience with PCN seedlings. I live in South
Central British Columbia at the North end of Okanagan Lake. All of the adice
I could get told me that PCNs would not live here and I proved the experts
to be correct after spending a considerable amount of money on importing
plants. They all died quickly.

Then on a whim, I ordered some seed from Signa and germinated them indoors
during the winter, In late spring I set them out in the garden and did
nothing special for them after that. Their first winter outdoors was the
coldest in the 18 years we have lived here.-27F although with about 15" to
18" of snow cover. They all not only lived but flowered that spring and have
been thriving ever since (eight years now).

Our soil is a sandy loam and our climate normally has a cold but relatively
short winter and hot dry summers. The PCNs are planted in the open with no
shade.

These seeds were all "mixed" PCNs and I judged that there were probably
about 5 or 6 species involved in the total. They are little gems and I look
forward to seeing them each spring. Since that first winter they have
survived a couple of cold winters during which we had very little snow.
Since that time we have moved some of them to a field where they are planted
with Siberians and Japanese and get the same amount of irrigation water and
they probably grow even better.

I think that either seedlings adapt very quickly to the environment in which
they are grown or else the problem is in the timing or methods of shipping
mature plants. We never did try shipping them but have dug and given several
away to local gardeners both spring and fall and they have all been
successful. It would really be worthwhile finding out if their range of
growth could be expanded.

Cheers
