OT-BIO: Francesca R Thoolen - I have been interested in irises since 1964 -
have grown many different types of irses during the years and now I have
slowed down a bit and am currently concentrating on breeding what is called
"aril-pums". These are hybrids between aril irises and pumilas. In the past
when tetraploid arils were not yet created (by colchicine treatment) the
hybrids which were created were infertile. Now with the advent of
tetraploid arils then crossed with pumilas which are tetraploid also one
can create fertile lines of "aril-pums" to continue with a breeding program
to improve these kinds of hybrids. - FRT.
