Hello again

From: Bill Shear <BILLS@hsc.edu>

Hello again, everyone! I see just by today's traffic that at least some of
the old gang from Tom's list has made their way here. Tom's list collapsed
just as I was about to being a month on the road, so I did not subscribe
here right away. Now that I'm back, I'm looking forward to meeting new
people and catching up with friends. Thank heavens this busy summer is
winding down. Just one more travel task: son Justin has qualified for the
AAU Junior Olympics and we will be heading down to Hampton Roads for that
weekend after next. Prayers, chants and other blessings gratefully
solicited!

Being away for almost a month is not good for your irises! I returned to
find that there had been some drastic sorting out, especially among the
TBs. RUFFLED BALLET and MARIPOSA SKIES had vanished almost without a trace,
and there is little left of a large clump of BEVERLY SILLS. On the
positive side, I continue to be impressed with the vigor of TITANS GLORY,
BE MINE, and IMMORTALITY. A few other rebloomers, ETERNAL WALTZ, BUCKWHEAT,
AUTUMN BUGLER among them have done very well and we soon should be seeing
rebloom on them.

Among the beardless irises, a row of Sinosiberian hybrids suffered mightily
from the heat and drought but may be salvagable. Established Siberians and
even Japanese seem OK. Someone let all my versicolor, pseudacorus and
laevigata seedlings dry up but some might revive.

Pardanthopsis dichotoma is blooming here and there in the garden. I've
sold a short article on this species to FINE GARDENING, but we need
sources. Does anyone know of a source of either seeds or plants of P.
dichotoma (Vesper Iris)?

My book, THE GARDENER'S IRIS BOOK, has been published and I must say with a
father's pride that it is a beautiful child. This is due in large part to
the contributions of Roger Foley, Mike Lowe, Carla Lankow, Sharon
McAllister and others who provided the color photographs. The official
release date is September 1st. I was glad that Taunton Press took my
advice and dropped the price to $25.00--further knocked down by Amazon, of
course, which already has it listed. Several of you will be getting
complimentary copies soon in thanks for the help you gave. I want to keep
thanking Mike and Anne Lowe for their aid--Mike virtually edited the book
and caught a goodly number of howlers in it (any that remain are my fault!).

Well, I'm starting to ramble. Back to work!
