Snatching a few minutes to catch up on the Iris-talk traffic while my
"Denver iris" soak in their bleach bath before getting potted up a la
Walter, so it might be appropriate to respond to Linda's question. The
basic idea is that the bleach solution acts as a general disinfectant to
discourage any infectious agents that may be hitching a ride on the
rhizomes, such as the various types of bacteria and fungus that can cause
rot when conditions become favorable for their growth. Think of it as a
sort of insurance policy or childhood vaccination for your new babies
before you turn them out in the world to fend for themselves.
