With reference to Ginny's question about borers this year, I have some
but not an exta-ordinary number. I did not use Cygon (regretfully??)
but I did undertake a massive clean up last autumn. What most interests
me this year is that I am finding quite a few dead borer in the
rhizomes. These are about half size (an inch or so long) and all look
exactly the same. They are a uniform reddish brown colour. The bodies
are quite intact but flacid. It looks to me as if there has been a
bacterial disease that is killing these animals. The dead ones are not
associated with any particular type of iris or region in the garden.
Hopeful sign!
Ian, in Ottawa where I. lacustris continues to flower out of season, one
I.ensata is hanging on, and Belamcanda is doing very well.
