Our Tigridias are blooming now. After growth appears above ground, bloom
follows in about 6 weeks. Tigridias will in fact bloom the first season
from seed (which is easily raised). Another little known fact about them
is that they are surprisingly hardy, survival having been reported even in
Zone 5b, with a heavy mulch applied after the foliage dies down. Here in
Zone 7b, they have to be divided almost annually because they get so
crowded bloom is reduced. The one thing I have against them is that the
flowers are magnets for Japanese Beetles and get chewed up real fast. By
the way, that reminds me that Tigridia bulbs were said to be a staple of
the Aztec diet!
Nice little flowers on Trimezia martiniquensis opening today.
My cross of Neomarica caerulea x N. gracilis appears to have taken. Six
pods have persisted from the pollinated flowers; none have formed from
flowers that were not pollinated.
