The discussion of Bois d'Arc takes me back a half century to Southeast
Kansas, where many miles of them were planted for hedges. Very effective
hedges! In that part of the country, they were always called Osage Orange,
and the fruits were called horse apples and reputedly poisonous. The
other meaning of horse apples was obsolete at that time and place. I never
heard anyone in that locality call them Bodark, but know that term was
used further South. I guess everyone knows it is one of the two premium
woods for making archery bows, almost completely supplanted now by
fiberglas.
