Re: OT: Bois d'Arc

Greetings.

I had a really neat private letter on the subject and I have asked the author
if I may share it with you and he has given me permission to do so.

"I had not realized that there were male and female hedge trees or as the
French called the wood of the bow bois d'arc but they are coming into bloom
and I am cutting some down to clear some yard I will look and see if I can
see a difference in the bloom.

The fruit makes great feed for squirrels and my dad said there was an Osage
Indian that would gather them in the fall to feed his horse. I know that a
horse will eat everyone he can get to. Also they can be used under a house to
keep out spiders.

Did you know that a mature tree does not have thorns? It is only while it is
young and very eatable by animals that it has the thorns. The wood is very
hard and orange colored and the old people in the Ozark Mountains used the
roots to dye cloth yellow. And the wood was used for post and I know of some
that have been in the ground for over a hundred years and still not
completely rotted away.

Jim from the Ozarks and the land of the Osage.
